The Dawning of a Pre-antibiotic Era: Genomic Approaches to Surveillance and Response

The emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance signals a return the pre-antibiotic era. There has been recent identification of organisms such as mcr-1 producing E. coli, that have resistance to all available classes of drugs. Novel approaches and methods are urgently required.

Genomic approaches offer one set of tools to better understand and potentially reduce the burden and transmission of resistant organisms. These require integration with concurrent strategies in prevention, novel compound discovery, and policy recommendations.

This presentation will highlight some of the scientific and programmatic contributions of genomics to the field of antimicrobial resistance, and potential limiations of their widespread application.

Presenter: Dr. Vanessa Allen

Vanessa Allen is Chief of Medical Microbiology at Public Health Ontario and an infectious diseases consultant at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. She completed her MD at McGill University and her residency in internal medicine, infectious diseases and microbiology at the University of Toronto and has a Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. Her research interests include the molecular epidemiology and mechanisms of resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the use of genomics to understand the original and control of food borne infections and novel strategies to combat antimicrobial resistant organisms.
